OSUN STATE RESIDENTS URGED TO TAKE PRECAUTIONS AGAINST DIPHTHERIA OUTBREAK

Osun State Primary Healthcare Development Board (OSPHCDB) has issued a call to parents and caregivers in Osun State, Nigeria, to ensure that their children receive the anti-diphtheria vaccine as part of the recommended childhood immunization schedule. This advisory follows the recent outbreak of diphtheria in Osun and other states across the country.

Earlier this week, the governor of Osun State, Ademola Adeleke, announced the activation of an emergency response center in response to the identification of a diphtheria case in Osogbo, the state capital. Tragically, a young boy succumbed to the infection.

Dr. Oluwole Fabiyi, the Executive Secretary of OSPHCDB, emphasized that diphtheria is a serious bacterial infection that affects the nose, throat, and skin. It can be prevented through vaccination. The disease is highly contagious and can be transmitted through droplets from coughing or sneezing, direct contact with infected individuals, or contact with contaminated objects and surfaces. Hence, maintaining proper hygiene and environmental sanitation are crucial preventive measures.

Symptoms of diphtheria include fever, runny nose, sore throat, cough, red eyes, neck swelling, and, in severe cases, the formation of a thick, gray membrane in the throat that can make breathing difficult.

In response to the outbreak, Governor Ademola Adeleke has ordered the immediate activation of the State Emergency Response Centre in order to contain the spread of the disease, initiate contact tracing, and provide treatment to affected residents.

Dr. Fabiyi urged residents to prioritize personal hygiene and promptly report any unusual symptoms, particularly those related to respiratory health. He also advised nursing mothers to ensure that their children complete their routine vaccination schedules by visiting primary healthcare facilities in their vicinity.

By raising awareness about diphtheria and promoting vaccination and hygiene practices, Osun State aims to mitigate the impact of the outbreak and protect the health and well-being of its residents.
