Good bye Barcelona, Messi declares
Lionel Messi has admitted that there are certain people in the club who do not want him back despite the publicly expressed desire of Barcelona leadership members.
Despite interest from Barcelona and Al-Hilal, the Argentina international stated today that he will be joining Inter Miami.
The 35-year-old was speaking in an interview with Catalan paper Sport today, confirming his move to MLS side Inter Miami.
He explained his reasons for not returning to Barcelona, and the strain he could put on their project is part of them.
He said that there were members of the Barcelona board who also shared this sentiment. They believed his return would not be good for the club.
Surely there are people on the board who didn’t want me to return, who believed that my return wouldn’t have been good for the club. I’m not returning to Barça, I’m going to Inter Miami,” Messi confirmed.
“I was very excited to be able to return, but after having experienced what I experienced and the exit I had, I did not want to be in the same situation again.”
“Waiting to see what was going to happen and leaving my future in the hands of others. I heard that Barça had to sell players or lower players’ salaries, and the truth is that I didn’t want to go through that.
It was an exceptional year with the World Cup in the middle of it which changed a lot of things. If the Barcelona thing didn’t work out, I wanted to leave Europe, get out of the spotlight and think more of my family. Obviously, I miss Barcelona.”
Barcelona sporting director Matheu Alemany was reported weeks ago to be disapproving of Messi’s return. This was cited as a possible reason he decided to leave for Aston Villa.
H
e changed his mind and will continue at Barcelona, but his stance on Messi’s return remains unconfirmed.
